Life of Pi: The Illustrated Edition
“Tomislav Torjanac has illustrated Yann Martel’s Booker-winning novel, Life of Pi, in sumptuous oils to create a special edition of rare beauty.” “Torjanac’s digitally enhanced oils not only complemented Pi, they gave it a whole new vision, one born not so much from the mind of a hallucinatory writer, but from the hands of a hallucinator. Oh, not that Torjanac’s work is in any way hippie, mind you, but to get where he gets with image and reveal, it’s a cinch he’s gotta see things no one else sees.” |
Life of Pi: The Illustrated Edition was published in September 2007 and it features 40 full-colour illustrations (mostly full-page). There are two English-language editions:

^ The UK (Canongate) edition - hardcover with black linen spine, debossed letters, bookmark ribbon and illustrated endpapers; printed on matte, cream-coloured paper (photo by Pentagram)

^ The US (Harcourt) edition [identical to the Canadian (Knopf) edition] - hardcover with jacket, varnished illustration and letters; printed on bright white, coated art paper
All the illustrations in the book are oil/digital, 50x65cm, and painted from the first person's perspective - as seen through the main character's eyes. Below is a small preview with the appropriate quotes.

^ Lord, avert their eyes from me, I whispered in my soul.

^ I threw the mako towards the stern.

^ "There goes our lunch."
Other editions of Life of Pi: The Illustrated Edition:
^ Chinese, Hebrew, German, Hungarian, Croatian, Slovenian and Korean.
